Kilimanjaro
Tanzania boasts the highest mountain on the African continent: Mount Kilimanjaro. Kilimanjaro is situated in the Kilimanjaro National Park, lies three degrees below the Equator and is the largest free standing mountain in the world. Mount Kilimanjaro consists of three dormant volcano peaks, with Kibo the highest and youngest, flanked by Shira and Mwenzi. On a clear day Uhuru peak (5895m / 19 340ft) can be seen from up to 160kms away. A permanent ice cap covers the peak, although fears exist that earth warming might ultimately cause the ice to disappear.
There are four major routes available to climb Kilimanjaro: Marangu Route (Coca Cola Route), with accommodation in huts, and the other routes where overnight facilities only include tents, Machame (Whiskey route), Shira and Umbwe. Other less-known routes e.g. Rongai and Lemosho also exist.
The Western Breach Route via Arrow Glacier was closed late 2005 as a result of fatal accidents due to rock falls. This route was recommended only to very fit and capable climbers. It is unsure when The Western Breach route will once again be opened. |
